Inleiding:<\/em><\/h3>

Meta, het moederbedrijf van Instagram en Facebook, krijgt een flinke tik op de vingers van de Europese privacywaakhond. Volgens recente beslissingen mogen de populaire sociale-mediaplatforms geen gepersonaliseerde advertenties meer aanbieden aan Europese gebruikers, tenzij er expliciete toestemming is verkregen. Waarom zijn Gepersonaliseerde Advertenties Zo Belangrijk?<\/strong><\/h4>

Gepersonaliseerde advertenties, afgestemd op gebruikerskenmerken en internetgedrag, vormen een essentieel onderdeel van Meta’s verdienmodel. Door profielen van gebruikers samen te stellen, kan Meta adverteerders het perfecte publiek bieden, wat resulteert in hogere inkomsten. Daarnaast gebruikt Meta de verzamelde gegevens voor analyses en de ontwikkeling van nieuwe producten en diensten.<\/p>

Waar Komt het Verbod Vandaan?<\/strong><\/h4>

De European Data Protection Board heeft dit verbod opgelegd, gesteund door diverse nationale toezichthouders. Noorwegen nam in augustus een vergelijkbaar standpunt in, dat Meta zonder succes aanvocht. Meta dreigde zelfs het land te verlaten, maar heeft dat nog niet gedaan en blijft de advertenties aanbieden, ondanks een dagelijkse boete van 90.000 euro sinds 14 augustus!<\/p>

Nu is het aan de Ierse toezichthouder DPC, vanwege Meta’s Europese hoofdkantoor in Dublin, om het verbod te handhaven. Op 31 oktober heeft DPC Meta officieel op de hoogte gesteld van het besluit, waarna Meta een week de tijd krijgt om zich aan te passen.<\/p>

Hoe Reageert Meta Op het Verbod?<\/strong><\/h4>

In een poging om toch gepersonaliseerde advertenties aan te bieden, introduceert Meta betalende abonnementen voor Facebook en Instagram. Gebruikers kunnen voor 13 euro per maand de apps zonder advertenties gebruiken, wat Meta beschouwt als uitdrukkelijke toestemming. Dit heeft echter een nieuwe discussie aangewakkerd onder Europese toezichthouders, die verdeeld zijn over de geldigheid van deze betaaloptie als toestemming.<\/p>

Is er een Alternatief?<\/strong><\/h4>

De Noorse toezichthouder stelt een interessante tussenweg voor: de ‘basic ad’. Hierbij blijft de app gratis, maar worden advertenties alleen gepersonaliseerd op basis van door gebruikers verstrekte informatie, zoals bio-gegevens en specifieke interesses. Of deze aanpak breder geaccepteerd wordt, moet nog blijken.<\/p>

Conclusie<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>

De komende weken beloven spannend te worden, terwijl Meta en Europese toezichthouders strijden over de toekomst van gepersonaliseerde advertenties op sociale mediaplatforms.
